Aguardio protects ground-breaking green concept with patent application

Aguardio has developed a simple, yet smart, intelligent solution that will help people around the world to take shorter showers, thereby benefiting both the environment and their wallets. In collaboration with Kanved Patent Consulting, Aguardio has submitted a patent application to protect the idea and the green concept

Have you ever timed how much time you spend in the shower? Or measured how much water runs out of the shower head, while you are singing your heart out? Fit the Aguardio solution in the bathroom and find out the answers. That is how Thomas Munch-Laursen (CEO of the Vejle-based company, Aguardio) puts it.

“Our device is an easily-fitted plug-and-play solution for the shower cabin. Using wireless technology, its sensors collect data on the humidity and temperature in the bathroom, while measuring how long the hot water runs. In real time, the person in the shower can see the measurements on the display, and this encourages them to use less water. It is smart, not only for the environment, but also for the energy bill of the individual household,” explains Thomas Munch-Laursen.

Help the environment and reduce water consumption with Aguardio

The aim of Aguardio is to reduce water consumption in the shower by promoting sustainable human behaviour.

“The Aguardio solution is particularly popular with hotels, housing associations, sports centres, continuation schools and folk high schools, because they can make a difference climate-wise and brand themselves in a greener direction, while also saving a lot of money on water bills,” says Thomas Munch-Laursen, citing a specific example.

“For example, it has been proven that, as a result of our ‘display guide’, guests in one particular hotel took shorter showers. Overall, shower time was reduced by an impressive 20%,” says the CEO.

IPR advice provided overview and clarification

Aguardio’s smart solution detects our shower behaviour. Using four sensors, the Aguardio device collects data and via artificial intelligence and algorithms converts these data into graphs that provide insight and understanding of the shower data. These data are used specifically to present various visual symbols on the display, which nudges the user into taking shorter showers voluntarily on the basis of their desire to make a difference.

“We believe we have a smart concept, but for some time doubted whether it would be possible to obtain patent protection for our solution. An IPR consulting process with Kanved Patent Consulting clarified the matter, opening our eyes to the advantages of submitting a patent application.”

“Nicolai has professional attitude. It is impressive how he grasps the essence of a complex product and communicates it so clearly in the patent application. Our collaboration led to the filing of a patent application that covers our entire concept. This provides us with a solid foundation for continuing our work on motivating and helping people to change their behaviour, with a view to using less water in the future and thereby taking better care of our environment."

“The patent application protects our business concept, providing us with room for manoeuvre and ensuring us a clearer market position. It also gives us a stronger negotiating mandate in our discussions with potential investors,” explains Thomas Munch-Laursen, who felt in safe hands throughout the process with Nicolai Kanved, CEO of Kanved Patent Consulting.

Aguardio ApS - Facts

Aguardio started in 2017 as ‘ShowerEcoGuide’. The company was founded by Niels-Arne Mikkelsen (CFO) and Thomas Munch-Laursen (CEO).

The company produces the Aguardio solution, which is fitted in shower cubicles. The solution then, for example, measures how long the hot water runs, how much humidity there is in the bathroom, and the temperature. The goal is to nudge consumers into reducing their water consumption.

In addition to the saving benefits of shorter showering time, the Aguardio solution can also be used to optimise operation and, by measuring humidity and temperature, ensure that the bathrooms comply with a general standard.

In 2020 we will launch the Aguardio Leak sensor, which can identify toilets that keep running.

The company’s payoff is: “Shower smarter and save water, energy and money.”

In 2019, Aguardio won the Vejle Municipality Entrepreneur Award for their digital solution.
In 2020 they were in the finals for the title of Danish Climate Entrepreneur of the Year.
